Reading groups for people with sight loss

Tips on setting up book groups with blind and partially sighted peopleThe aim of Read for RNIB Day is to open up a world of reading for blind and partially people. With only seven per cent of books fully accessible, there is much work to be done which is why we need your support.

Many reading groups across the country are already trying to buck that trend and do not only have sighted people as members. At Read for RNIB Day we would love to see that number increase, we believe everyone should be able to take part in a reading group and experience the joy of reading.

Getting hold of accessible books to read

RNIB National Library Service is the largest library in the UK for readers with sight loss. We offer a wide choice of fiction and non-fiction books in audio, braille and giant print for adults and children. Whether you want to read for pleasure or learning, relaxation or inspiration, the RNIB National Library Service can help you discover a new world of accessible books and reading.

We are here to support people with sight problems, whether yourself or someone in your reading group and can advise on supplying the chosen books in suitable alternative formats.

The other option is to buy or borrow an unabridged audio book or a download an accessible eBook.

Telephone book club

RNIB’s Telephone Book Clubs allow people with sight loss to share your passion for books, discover new authors and hear from guest speakers including narrators and publishers from the comfort of your own home. Recent speakers have been authors Jill Dawson, Sarah Waters, Jane Finnis, Martin Davies and poets Katrina Porteous, Esther Morgan and George Szirtes.

Each book club runs once a month for six months and are facilitated by our friendly and highly trained volunteers. Books are chosen from a varied list, and all are available on DAISY CD, braille, MP3, large print, and audio cassette. It costs £12 for six sessions but is free for RNIB members.

If you are interested in joining a group then please email talkandsupport@rnib.org.uk or call on 0845 330 3723 or 020 7391 2218.
