Schools

Read for RNIB is now in its third year and we need your support to make it bigger and better. By taking part you'll be raising much needed funds for RNIB and helping to change the story for blind and partially sighted people all over the UK.

Read for RNIB 2013 took place on Friday 11 October, but we are encouraging everyone to hold a literary-themed fundraising event on a date that works best for you throughout the year. Register your school today!

Charlotte loves receiving books from RNIB’s library. It makes it possible for her to read the same books as her friends. She loves reading and currently her favourite books are the Harry Potter series.”
- Mum of Charlotte, registered blind and a braille reader.

Dedicated schools resources

When you register for Read for RNIB, we will send you a fundraising kit and you will be also be able to access a schools pack that includes a host of inclusive reading-themed activity ideas for Key Stages 1-3. We have written these with the help of Think Global to make sure that they meet National Curriculum needs and give teachers all the materials and information to run engaging, practical sessions in and outside the classroom.

These materials are exclusively available as downloads to schools that register for Read for RNIB Day.

Reading Relay

Get together at work or school and see how long your team can keep a story going! Each person reads in turn and passes the story on, either aloud or silently. This challenge can be reading a whole book or reading continuously for a set period of time – so you might have people taking it in turns to read out loud in the canteen for the whole day!

Poetry recital

Roses are red, violets are blue, you’re supporting Read for RNIB Day, so thank you! Ask those in the office, school or community to come along for some live poetry reading – be sure to ask for volunteer readers at the same time. See how long you can keep reciting poems aloud for as a group or let everyone read out their favourite piece. Donations welcomed from those who come along and listen, especially if you manage to get a poetry-chain going.

Book sales/swap

Everyone loves a book sale or swap! Ask your friends, colleagues, classmates, family etc to bring in or donate a pre-loved book, invite everyone along and ask for a donation to take away a book and open up a whole new world of reading.

If you work for a company with more than 300 employees then you might want to consider holding a Book Event book sale.
